Chapter 12
âRUN!â I shout as everyone clambers toward the exit.
Back outside, the ten of us scatter in different directions, some into buildings and others down alleyways. I turn left and then quickly duck into an alley myself, peering my head around the corner to watch the snake slithering out, its horns scraping against the top of the crumbled doorway. In the light, I can see that its scales are bright red, almost glowing as if they had been lit ablaze, the solid color broken by a number of dark bands along the rest of its body.
âKhazak!â I hear Davidâs whispered voice above me and look up to see him peering down over a balcony with Tsula and Nathaniel. âUp here!â
I sprint around the corner into the same building, rushing up the stairs to the roof to find the others.
âWhat the hell is that thing?â David asks no one in particular.
âAn uktena,â Tsula repeats herself. âA-a great horned serpent.â
âLampropeltis cornigigantus,â Nathaniel continues with a scientific moniker. âAn incredibly deadly and resilient serpent.â
âWhatâs it doing?â David asks from his perch, watching as it flicks its tongue into the air.
âScenting,â I tell him, before turning to the two mages. âHow do we stop it?â
âYeah, what are its strengths and weaknesses?â David asks next.
âYou mean aside from being a giant snake?â Nathaniel snarks before losing the attitude. âIts hide is incredibly tough. Normal weapons canât break through its scales.â
âExcept on its belly!â Tsula excitedly corrects. âTheyâre softer there. You also have to be careful of the gem on its forehead. You cannot look at it.â
âItâs a specialized translucent scale,â Nathaniel continues the explanation. âThe snake can channel energy through it to create a bright burst of light, capable of stunning someone.â
âA-and its breath is incredibly noxious.â It is Tsulaâs turn to add to our horror. âInhaling it could kill a person.â
âGreat, so weâre fighting a giant, invincible snake that we canât get close to, look at, or breathe around,â David summarizes our predicament, unimpressed.
âWhere is your other sword?â I ask, noticing he only has two. âYou know, the one allegedly able to cut through anything?â
âI left it back at camp.â He rolls his eyes at my exasperated expression. âForgive me for not realizing we would be fighting a giant fucking snake today!â
âThatâs ten,â I warn, but before I can say more, the ground shakes as something crashes nearby.
âAaaaahhh!â Thatâs Corrine!
Looking down, I see the snake is attempting to burrow its way into another building, no doubt where Corrine and some of the others are hiding. Thankfully, its large horns are getting in the way, crashing against the entrance. But each time it rears back and tries again, more cracks form in the stone above it.
âHey!â Michael comes running out of a different building, calling out to the snake. âOver here, asshole!â He fires off a magical light arrow, the snake hissing in pain as it bursts against its skin.
âWe have to get down there and help them,â I decide immediately. âThey have no idea what theyâre dealing with.
