Chapter 12

“RUN!” I shout as everyone clambers toward the exit.

Back outside, the ten of us scatter in different directions, some into buildings and others down alleyways. I turn left and then quickly duck into an alley myself, peering my head around the corner to watch the snake slithering out, its horns scraping against the top of the crumbled doorway. In the light, I can see that its scales are bright red, almost glowing as if they had been lit ablaze, the solid color broken by a number of dark bands along the rest of its body.

“Khazak!” I hear David’s whispered voice above me and look up to see him peering down over a balcony with Tsula and Nathaniel. “Up here!”

I sprint around the corner into the same building, rushing up the stairs to the roof to find the others.

“What the hell is that thing?” David asks no one in particular.

“An uktena,” Tsula repeats herself. “A-a great horned serpent.”

“Lampropeltis cornigigantus,” Nathaniel continues with a scientific moniker. “An incredibly deadly and resilient serpent.”

“What’s it doing?” David asks from his perch, watching as it flicks its tongue into the air.

“Scenting,” I tell him, before turning to the two mages. “How do we stop it?”

“Yeah, what are its strengths and weaknesses?” David asks next.

“You mean aside from being a giant snake?” Nathaniel snarks before losing the attitude. “Its hide is incredibly tough. Normal weapons can’t break through its scales.”

“Except on its belly!” Tsula excitedly corrects. “They’re softer there. You also have to be careful of the gem on its forehead. You cannot look at it.”

“It’s a specialized translucent scale,” Nathaniel continues the explanation. “The snake can channel energy through it to create a bright burst of light, capable of stunning someone.”

“A-and its breath is incredibly noxious.” It is Tsula’s turn to add to our horror. “Inhaling it could kill a person.”

“Great, so we’re fighting a giant, invincible snake that we can’t get close to, look at, or breathe around,” David summarizes our predicament, unimpressed.

“Where is your other sword?” I ask, noticing he only has two. “You know, the one allegedly able to cut through anything?”

“I left it back at camp.” He rolls his eyes at my exasperated expression. “Forgive me for not realizing we would be fighting a giant fucking snake today!”

“That’s ten,” I warn, but before I can say more, the ground shakes as something crashes nearby.

“Aaaaahhh!” That’s Corrine!

Looking down, I see the snake is attempting to burrow its way into another building, no doubt where Corrine and some of the others are hiding. Thankfully, its large horns are getting in the way, crashing against the entrance. But each time it rears back and tries again, more cracks form in the stone above it.

“Hey!” Michael comes running out of a different building, calling out to the snake. “Over here, asshole!” He fires off a magical light arrow, the snake hissing in pain as it bursts against its skin.

“We have to get down there and help them,” I decide immediately. “They have no idea what they’re dealing with.
